SELU Supporting Students Through the Application Process 2024
This course provides an overview of how colleges make admissions decisions, including which factors are considered, how important each factor typically is, and how to help students present themselves in the best manner. Participants will learn about specific application components and the recommended timeline for completing each. Participants will also learn about early decision, early action, and regular decisions, as well as the pros and cons of each. Finally, participants will learn how to help students write effective essays and resumes as well as how to write effective letters of recommendation for students.
SELU College and Career Planning in the Middle Grades I 2024
Learn about the critical role middle school plays in shaping students’ postsecondary readiness, the barriers to college that many students face, and how to use your school’s data to identify and address equity issues.
SELU Financial Aid II: Financial Aid Programs 2024
This course provides an
overview of the various financial aid programs offered by the federal
Department of Education and the student qualifications for each. Participants
will learn about and compare different types of loans as well as the process
that must be followed to qualify, utilize, and repay student loans.
SELU Financial Aid I: Introduction to Financial Aid 2024
This course will focus on the different types of financial aid programs available to learners pursuing education after high school. You will learn about how factors such homelessness, foster care, and immigration status can hinder a student's likelihood to access financial aid and enroll in postsecondary education. You will also learn the difference between sticker price and net price (i.e., what families actually pay for college), as well as how institutions determine each student's total amount of financial need. Finally, this course covers the two most common methodologies used to determine expected family contribution--the FAFSA and CSS Profile--and how these methodologies are different from one another.
SELU Postsecondary Advising for Special Population Students 2024
This module was developed for practicing professional school counselors, pre-service school counselors, and college access professionals. It includes six sessions that address the skills and knowledge required to help the following groups of students prepare for college and careers:
- homeless students
- students in foster care and wards of the court
- students with disabilities
- LGBTQ students
- migrant, immigrant and refugee students
- court-involved youth
Participants will build knowledge and skills in understanding and identifying special populations; building support systems; and planning for education after high school.
SELU Postsecondary Exploration, Match, and Fit 2024
This course focuses on the
impact that college information has on students' postsecondary decisions as
well as the impact that poor college fit can have on academic achievement and degree
completion. Participants will learn how to reduce undermatch by helping
students fully understand all of their postsecondary choices, important factors
to consider when comparing colleges, and how to make informed decisions
regarding financial, social, and academic fit.
SELU Career Development for the Workforce of the Future 2024
This course is designed to increase counselors’ understanding of current and future workforce trends, as well as the general and specific skills workers will need for job success. You'll learn about potential for job fields that are expanding, shrinking and stagnating; the impact of automation on the workforce; strategies for helping students identify career interests; and understanding the link between secondary course selection and the postsecondary credentials that lead to careers of interest.
SELU Creating Postsecondary Opportunities for All Students 2024
This course focuses on the role of the school counselors and college access advisors in ensuring that all students have the necessary support needed to pursue education beyond high school. You will learn about the barriers that many students face in planning for postsecondary education as well as the specific strategies and practices that can increase access to "college" for all students. (Note that in this course, the word "college" and "college-going" refer to any formal education beyond high school.) . You will assess your own personal beliefs and attitudes about groups of students and measure whether "college-going" practices are present in a particular school. Finally, you will make a plan for improving the culture of postsecondary equity at the school or schools with which you work.
